In July 1997 the Bank of Albania (Banka e Shqipërisë) began to introduce a new banknote family.
In 2002 the Bank of Albania (Banka e Shqipërisë) has introduced new banknotes with altered security features.
In 2008 and 2009 the Bank of Albania (Banka e Shqipërisë) has introduced a new 2.000-Lekë banknote (2008) and a 5.000-Lekë banknote (2009) with enhanced security features.
On 12. September 2019 the Bank of Albania (Banka e Shqipërisë) presented a new family of banknotes, which were introduced between 2019 and 2022.
